Our History
The Vikings you know today, has not always been so. It all began back in 1981 when a new club by the name of NORTHERN DISTRICTS SOFTBALL CLUB was formed. For three years they played at a little Oval in Girrawheen until 1984, when the move was made to Kingsway Sporting Complex where they have been ever since. Which might actually explain why it is time for a re-development of the Clubrooms.
In 1997 it was decided that a major change was in order. ‘New Name – New Uniform’ was the theory, and this is how VIKINGS SOFTBALL CLUB was created. Rumour has it, that the Men just didn’t like the Brown Coloured Uniform.
Armed with a new name and uniform, it did not take long for VSC to make their mark on the competition. Was it because they were not wearing Brown anymore? Well I suppose it depends on who you ask.
In 1998 Vikings took out 5 Premierships; 1 Junior, and 4 Senior Grand Final winning teams. Vikings had become a formidable force that deserved respect.
Vikings Softball Club became the biggest Winter Men’s Softball Club in the WASA competition having up to 6 teams nominated each year. This is where the women stepped in.
“We should have a Vikings Women’s team” was only lip service until 2005, when what started out as a simple thought on the sidelines of one of the men’s games developed from a plausible idea into reality.
The idea of a women’s team was swiftly passed at the next Committee Meeting by all members, and so the Vikings Women’s section of the Viking’s Softball Club began. With an initial expectation of possible failure, the 2005/06 season saw the first Women’s team take the field in the WASA Summer Softball Competition playing at Yokine Reserve. We have been growing ever since. In 2016, we introduced our own constitution, becoming Vikings Women’s Fastpitch Club Inc, trading as Vikings Women’s Softball Club.
As well as playing in PSL Competitions, we’ve sent teams to the Pan Pacific Masters Games in Queensland, the Northwest Championships in Port Hedland and various carnivals and tournaments across WA. We’ve also gone international, playing in championships in Canada, Sydney and Italy.
